LEED®

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System

(For Commercial, Institutional, Large Residential)

Using water-efficient products and systems can earn points toward certification levels under the LEED program (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Developed by U.S. Green Building Council, LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality. LEED is a practical rating tool for green building design and construction that provides immediate and measurable results for building owners and occupants.

LEED was created to establish common standards for environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. Two of the 69 total LEED points involve indoor water use, with one point earned for a 20% reduction in overall water consumption and two points for achieving a 30% reduction.

Water Efficiency and LEED

The aim of LEED is to increase the efficiency of water use, while decreasing the strain on municipal water and wastewater systems. LEED certification ensures that everyone in the building industry does their part to meet or exceed these guidelines.

Today’s building owners, developers and architects are working with contractors to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points. The Canadian and US Green Building Councils reward builders for using accepted or new green principles. After completion, commercial, institutional and large residential buildings may qualify for Silver, Gold or Platinum certification, by the council, upon receiving the required documentation and application fee.

Points are awarded for 5 LEED categories: sustainable sites; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; and indoor environmental quality.
The brands available at Kitchen & Bath Classics all carry water efficient products that meet eligibility requirements for water-efficient programs and can be used toward LEED points.
